Thanks to Hikvision cameras featuring cutting-edge Intel® processing, the WWF conservation team will be able to intelligently and accurately record and monitor these animals, and protect their habitat,” says Zhou Zhenhua, Hikvision Product Manager.
The conservation power of intelligent video
Hikvision started working with Intel in 2018 to design a new video-based solution for the WWF to tackle the immediate endangerment of the Amur tiger. The case helps the local WWF team to accurately detect and monitor wild Amur tigers while advancing a digital, intelligent transformation of wildlife protection. This solution utilizes Hikvision’s intelligent cameras for wildlife protection, equipped with Intel® Movidius™ AI Vision Processing Units (VPU), and team installed a front-end target detection algorithm that greatly increase the processing efficiency. Also by avoiding capturing useless images, battery power will be saved for the smart-camera trap. Through using this type cameras, the conservation team can use the cameras to identify an Amur tiger when in view, intelligently filtering out images that are not relevant and thus reducing the workload.
Helping to protect one of the world’s most incredible birds
An incredible bar-headed goose is known for being the highest flying migratory birds in the world. The goose can rise to extreme altitudes of many thousands of meters – some 6,400m or more – in atmospheres with less than 10% of the oxygen found at sea level. In 2018, Green River started using Hikvision security cameras for monitoring and protecting the goose population. Observing spots of this type of goose were set up with Hikvision cameras, to enable remote monitoring of the area 24/7. Green River has also been using Hikvision equipment to stream high-definition live video of the geese online. In addition to image processing, data storage and transmission technology is enabling wildlife protectors to collect and process data about the geese more effectively.
Hikvision: powerful technology for smarter conservation
The Yangtze Finless Porpoise Conservation Project was launched in May 2019 to help tackle the growing threat to the porpoise population. The collaboration between the Chinese government and a variety of organizations, including the World Wide Fund for Nature, the One Planet Fund – and at Hikvision. Hikvision surveillance technology is a main part of the conservation work, and two Hikvision solutions are being used: the first are underwater cameras. These anti-corrosion and high-resolution cameras will enable conservationists to virtually immerse themselves 24/7 throughout the porpoises’ aquatic habitat, monitoring the environment closely while collecting valuable data about the animals’ natural behavior in the wild.
The second case is unmanned aerial vehicles, coupled with high resolution Hikvision cameras, to patrol the habitat efficiently from above. The population of porpoise is located within the main Yangtze river channel in central and eastern China. This kind of cutting-edge technology is therefore hugely valuable for efficient monitoring over such a broad area. It must be collaborative effort to protect endangered species such as the Yangtze Finless Porpoise. Hikvision technology is being used to help monitor and protect a variety of endangered animals.
